Best Time to Visit Rishikesh

Rishikesh is a year-round destination, but the experience changes a lot by season — the rafting stops in high monsoon, the views are clearest in winter, and the shoulder months are the sweet spot. Here’s when to go for the trip you want.

Key seasons

Rafting season
& the monsoon

River rafting and riverside camping run roughly from mid-September to June. During the peak monsoon (July–August) the Ganga runs high and fast, and rafting and riverside camps usually close for safety — the one time to plan around if adventure is your goal.

The rest of Rishikesh keeps going year-round: the Ganga aarti, yoga, temples and the bridges are open whatever the season. So even in monsoon there’s plenty to do — just swap the river for the spiritual side.

Pack right

What to
pack

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): warm layers, a jacket, thermals for camp nights
  • Summer (Apr–Jun): light cottons, sun hat, sunscreen, plenty of water
  • Any rafting: quick-dry clothes, secure footwear, a dry bag
  • Always: modest clothing for temples and ghats, easy slip-off shoes
  • Remember Rishikesh is vegetarian and alcohol-free — plan accordingly

Good to Know

Questions,

Late September to November and February to June are the best months — pleasant weather, active rafting and clear foothill views. Winter is cold but offers the clearest Himalayan sunrises and a quiet, spiritual feel, while the peak monsoon (July–August) usually pauses rafting and riverside camping.
River rafting runs roughly from mid-September to June. It closes during the peak monsoon (July–August) when the Ganga is too high and fast, and reopens once levels settle. September–November and February–June give the best mix of water and weather.
Yes — the town is lush and green, and the Ganga aarti, yoga, temples and bridges all operate. But rafting and riverside camping usually pause for safety, and heavy rain can affect travel and treks. If adventure is your priority, avoid July–August; for a spiritual or yoga trip, monsoon is fine.
Winter (December–February) is cold, roughly 5–20°C, crisp and clear — the best time for Himalayan views from Kunjapuri and for a quiet, spiritual stay. Rafting still runs but the water is very cold, so dress warmly, and pack layers for chilly camp nights.
Weekdays outside long weekends and holidays are quietest. Mid-winter (barring New Year) and the shoulder weeks of the monsoon see fewer visitors. Avoid major festivals, long weekends and the Char Dham yatra peak if you want calm — or let us time your trip around the crowds.
